This is the Center for the Handheld Web (CHW). The CHW is housed in the [1] Information Technology Department of the [2] College of Computing and Information Sciences at the [3] Rochester Institute of Technology.
The CHW is aimed at helping Web content creators and Webmasters to extend the reach of their sites onto handheld devices. Please read more [A]bout the Center faculty and students who are working to define and create the code & standards to support the cutting edge of emerging Mobile Web technologies.
In an effort to assist content creators in working with mobile devices, we have posted a tentative port of the [4] XHTML-MP & CSS Mobile tag documentation at this site. The documentation has been converted from an all-in-one-page HTML document (obtained at the Openwave site) into a one-page-per-tag-or-rule set of XHTML-MP documents. If your mobile browser pays attention to the media attribute in stylesheet links, then these pages should display properly.
The new WAP standards eliminate the need for gateways, so Webmasters can serve handheld content from the servers they already run.
The WAP standards also now use a subset of XHTML ([5] XHTML-MP) and a subset of CSS ([6] CSS Mobile), so content creators can build on their prior knowledge of XHTML & CSS for full-sized displays. Building on prior knowledge is always a help in aquiring new knowledge.
We are beginning to put together a set of materials to assist organizations in extending their existing Web sites to engage Mobile Web users. Feel free to read the Executive Summary from a presentation we are developing on the [7] "Practicalities of Building Handheld-Enabled Websites", or just browse our [8] works in progress area.
As an undergraduate independent study project, one of my students has addressed the issue of online assertions about "best practices" for designing and implementing Web pages aimed at handheld users. You can find his [9] online literature review posted here, along with some PDF versions of various papers on the subject.
[lit review being revised & expanded]
We have started a new blog for the Center at the new CHW Webserver. We anticipate creating a weekly "major" posting about "One Web" site design and implementation topics, with minor supportive posts (or maybe sidetracks) during the week. We should have the entire site redeveloped and moved to the new server by mid-April. There is more to come, so feel free to register and join the conversation.
